Why Do Cat's Have Whisker's ? Whisker's help cat's feel their way around, their whiskers are so sensitive that they can detect the slightest directional change in a breeze. For example at night, the whiskers help the cat slink its way through a room and not bump into anything, this is because the air currents in the room change depending on where pieces of furniture are in the room. As the cat walks through the room and approaches a chair, he/she will know which way to turn based on the change in air current around the chair. Cat's use their whiskers to help them know whether or not he/she will fit through an opening. The whisker tips are sensitive to pressure. When you see a cat sticking their head in and out of an opening they are measuring up the opening to see if they will be able to fit through it. A cat's whiskers are also a good indicator of their mood. Normally when a cat is relaxed and happy their whiskers are pushed forward but when a cat feels angry, scared or defensive, he/she will pull their whiskers back. A Cat's whiskers should never be cut or trimmed |
