What is Spaying and Neutering ?

Spaying is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus of the female cat.  Neutering is the surgical removal of the testicles in the male cat.  Spaying & Neutering removes an animals ability to reproduce.

Why Should I spay my kitty ?

To prevent unwanted pregnancies, there are so many kitties in this world that are in need of a home, because they are unwanted and have been abandoned, by not spaying your kitty you will be adding to the problem.  Spaying your kitty also cuts down on health problems, by removing the ovaries and uterus you won't have to fear ovarian cysts, uterine infections and cancer of the reproductive tract.  Spayed cats also tend to be more gentle and affectionate.  Spaying will help make your cat much happier by not having to go through heat periods.  So even if your kitty is an indoor kitty you should still get her spayed.

Why Should I neuter my kitty ?

Neutering decreases the chances of developing prostatic disease and hernias, and eliminates the chances of developing testicular cancer.  A neutered kitty will be less inclined to roam or fight, if done early male cats tend not to spray, or stop spraying.  So even if your kitty is an indoor kitty you should still get him neutered.

How old does my kitty have to be, before it can be spayed or neutered ?

The average age is 6 months old, this is when kitty is just starting to mature sexually.

But Isn't it expensive ?

Different vet's charge different prices, so ring around.  But don't forget your kitty only needs to have it done once.  Remember pets do cost money, and if your asking a question like that then maybe you shouldn't consider owning a pet.  There are help organizations though that will help you if you haven't got alot of money, so ask your local vet for more information.

How long will my kitty have to stay in the vets for ?

Normally your kitty will be in and out the same day, some vets though like to keep kitty in over night.
